Universal Pause Button is a free, open-source computer tool that lets you pause video games or programs that usually cannot be paused. It was created by a developer named Ryan Ries and is hosted on the Universal Pause Button GitHub Page. How It Works
The tool uses a deep Windows system command to temporarily freeze all the background work of the active window.
The Hotkey: By default, you press the Pause/Break key on your keyboard to stop everything instantly.
Unpausing: Pressing the same key again lets the game pick up right where you left off.
Custom Keys: If your keyboard does not have a Pause key, you can change it to a different key using a simple settings text file.
Unpausing Cutscenes: Many story-driven video games have long movie scenes that you cannot skip or pause. This tool stops them if you need to step away.
Online or “Souls-like” Games: Single-player modes in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring famously do not let you pause. This tool forces them to freeze.
Saving Computer Power: If you need to step away from a heavy game, pausing it this way stops your graphics card from running hot, which saves energy. Known Risks
Because this tool forces a program to freeze at a deep level, it can sometimes cause minor glitches.
Crashes: Leaving a game frozen for too long or clicking away to a different app while it is paused can cause the game to crash.
Online Disconnections: If you use it while connected to an online game server, the server will think you lost your connection and might kick you out. Universal Pause Button – GitHub
